Pennsylvania Furnace, Pa. - The Pennsylvania Livestock Evaluation
Center will host the 36th Annual Performance Tested Bull Sale at noon
on Friday, March 27, in conjunction with the 20th Pennsylvania Beef Expo.
The sale will feature top gaining bulls that completed an 84-day testing program.
There are currently 119 bulls on test at the Centre County evaluation center, including
67 Angus, 20 Simmentals, 13 Herefords, eight Red Angus, five Limousin, five Charolais
and one Crossbred.
The fastest gaining bull is an Angus consigned by Russell and Judy Hollenback of
Towanda, Bradford County, and sired by SAV-8180 traveler 004. This bull's
average daily gain is 6.13 pounds.
Two Angus bulls are in contention for the second fastest daily gain on test.
Owned by Errer Hill Farms of Friedens, PA. and Riverbend Farms of Far Hills, N.J.,
the bulls have both gained an average of 6.07 pounds daily. The Pennsylvania
bull was sired by B/R New Frontier 095, while the New Jersey bull was sired by Connealy
Front Page 0228. The 67 Angus on test have averaged4.86 pounds per day gain.
The fastest-gaining bull of the Simmental breed is owned by Messick Farms of Middletown,
Dauphin County. this bull continues to gain 5.79 pounds daily. The 20
Simmentals on test averaged 4.60 pounds per day.
The 13 Hereford bulls on test have averaged 3.80 pounds daily gain, with a bull
consigned by John and Kathy Wagner of Catskill, N.Y., leading the group at 5.05
pounds average daily gain.
The eight Red Angus bulls have maintained a breed average gain of 4.44 pounds daily,
with a bull owned by Wade Vonada of Mill Hall, Clinton County, being the top-gainer.
This Avalanche 381 son gained 5.03 pounds per day.
The top gainer of the four Limousin bulls had an average daily gain of 4.12 pounds
daily and was consigned by Jonah Broughton of Attica, N.Y. The breed average
gain is 3.51 pounds per day.
The fasted gaining Charolais bull of the five on test is owned by Leo W. Muncy of
Pipestem, W. Va. This son of VCR Sir Duke 914 PLD has gained an average 5.36
pounds per day.
The crossbred bull, consigned by Frank Glass of Blairsville, Indiana County, continues
to excel while on test, gaining 4.84 pounds per day.
The Pennsylvania Beef Expo will be held March 26 - 29 and serves as the largest
event in the state to exclusively feature beef cattle. Highlights include
a Simmental Breeding Cattle Sale on Friday, march 27, at 3 p.m. at the Livestock
Evaluation Center, junior activities and competitions, producer seminars,
sales, a large trade show and the Pennsylvania Cattlemen's Association's awards
banquet and annual meeting.
